About This Site

Welcome to Factors of Design!

The purpose of this website is to investigate the factors that drive development of designs both large and small. This investigation is driven from a practical viewpoint, which helps answer the question: “How might this design approach be incorporated in a similarly structured design problem?” Although the problem domains may be very different, they may be logically equivalent.

As a design-centered website, participation is encouraged! Please provide feedback and interact with content either by commenting on blog posts or by emailing me at justus@factorsofdesign.com.

For an example of content this website is interested in, please see the list of sample questions below:

  •  Why do American saws cut on the push stroke whereas Japanese saws cut on the pull stroke?
  •  How does superstition with the number “13” influence the construction of buildings?
  •  How does designing a vehicle for a 33% grade influence the design of both roads and vehicle engines?

For more sample content this website is interested in, please see the video below. This video analyzes the influences that lead to different orange squeezers. Head on over to the blog to explore more!

Guiding Principles

We live in a designed society that has developed over millennia from past failures.

We interact with design problems every day; we should understand the factors that influence our designs.

Failure is integral part of the design process; fail early and often to learn what works and what does not.

The Evolution of Design

This video reflects the intent of this website: to explore how products have impacted society and vice versa. By understanding the factors that lead to given designs, then those factors and lessons learned may be reused in future designs.

In this video, an example of the history and evolution of the orange squeezer is considered.
